Do you want to help penguins where you live? You can make a difference in the world by doing these three things:
- Don't Litter and Clean Up Trash If You See It: Wind can carry trash and litter into the ocean where the tide can pick it up and carry it to where the penguins live. This trash can impact their lives - trash can kill penguins. If penguins see a shiny piece of trash, they do not know what it is and they might try to eat it.
Picture: Zach at Mystic Aquarium. He is standing in front of a seal made of garbage found in the ocean. Please don't litter.
- Recycle: Recycling reduces waste, so there is less trash that can end up in our oceans.
- Educate yourself about the species of penguins and the threats that face them: Online research (like this site) is a wonderful place to start. Or, you can go to a local library and look at books or magazines. My favorite way to learn about penguins is to visit zoos and aquariums to study them. When available, I like to go to penguin encounters to see my favorite animals up close. Some of my favorite places to visit penguins are: Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut, New England Aquarium in Boston, MA and the Florida Aquarium near Clearwater, Florida.
